Ingredients

  • 1 lb (454 g) ground pork
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) minced garlic
  • 1–2 tbsp (15–30 mL) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 can 8 oz (227 g) tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) ketchup
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) BBQ sauce
  • 1 box or bag or Texas garlic toast
  • 2 cups (225 g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground pork and chopped onion. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking the pork into small crumbles.

Step 3

Season with the salt, black pepper, onion powder, paprika, and minced garlic. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, ketchup, and BBQ sauce. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thick and flavourful.

Step 5

While the pork is simmering, place the garlic bread slices in a large skillet over medium heat. Toast each side until golden and crispy.

Step 6

Using the back of a spoon, gently press the centre of each toasted garlic bread slice to create a shallow “boat” for the filling.

Step 7

Arrange the garlic toast boats on a baking sheet. Spoon the Sloppy Joe pork mixture into each bread boat.

Step 8

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over each one.

Step 9

Bake for 8–10 minutes at 375°F (190°C), or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.

Step 10

Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve immediately.

TIP:

Press the bread gently while it’s still warm so it holds its boat shape without breaking. Simmer the pork mixture until thick to prevent the bread from becoming soggy. For extra colour, broil the bread for 1–2 minutes after baking while keeping a close eye on the cheese. Then, garnish with chopped parsley or sliced green onions for a fresh finish and serve with a crisp green salad or coleslaw for a complete meal.

Serving Suggestion:

Serve these Sloppy Joe Garlic Toast Boats with a fresh Caesar salad for a complete meal, or pair them with your favourite side such as:

Caesar salad, Garden salad, Coleslaw, Roasted vegetables, Sweet potato fries, Potato wedges, Dill pickle spears, Cucumber and tomato salad.

The crisp, fresh salad balances the rich, cheesy Sloppy Joe filling perfectly.
